Great Sound? Yes - Great Songs? No December 12, 2009 Music Police (Mass) 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
James certainly creates some great guitar sounds in the studio, but cool tones are not enough. Most songs start of kinda cool, but end up being very repetitious. I would suggest that Mr Wilsey team up with someone who really knows how to write great instrumental music to showcase his nice twang tones.
Guitar, man! June 5, 2009 B. D. Jones (Lakewood, CO United States) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
If you like the signature guitar riffs on the early Chris Isaak albums, you already like James Wilsey. His notes are sweet, twangy, deep and dark- this man can make the guitar flat out talk to you. Some notes come out in a low rumble, like distant thunder; others are like ripples in a languid blue pool of sonic bliss.
OK, I'm getting carried away.
Excellent collection. Buy. Get. Enjoy.
Really good work... March 17, 2009 Catfish (Stillwater, OK USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I really, really enjoy this CD, but you have to be ready for this kind of music. It isn't everyone's cup of tea. The reviews out there have pretty much characterized it, so read those and listen to the samples. What is here is really original and is one of the key ingredients that made Silvertone so enjoyable in their earlier CDs. Listen to Blue Hotel, Wrong to Love You (the early version, not the wimpy version on Baja Sessions) - in fact, most anything on the "Heart Shaped World" CD and you will know. This is the strong, muscular guitar work that shaped Silverton'e sound in that era. Of course, I enjoy Chris Isaak and Silvertone's work and always will. But Mr. Wilsey's sound is missing from later CDs and you will know that when you listen to "El Dorado." It is my sincere wish that Mr. Wilsey craft some more songs for fans of this kind of music.
Wild West Here We Come March 10, 2009 Gary Reiner (Sacramento, CA USA) El Dorado (2008) lives up to its name -- it is an instrumental journey into the wild west through and through. James Wilsey has put together a sort of one-of-a-kind, consistently erie, twangy, reverb-enhanced stroll through the west. Everyone should have this album in their collection if for no other reason than its uniqueness, and the fact that the production is top-notch.
Great Stuff! January 12, 2009 Louis E. Comeaujr (Maryland, USA) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
If you are familiar with James Wilsey, you probably don't need to read this review!
However, if you are not familiar with him, he was the guitar player for Chris Isaac for a while and played the haunting leads for the song "Wicked Game" among others. This CD met all my expectations! If you like his leads when he was with Chris Isaac, you won't be disappointed!
