Brilliant Singer-Songwriter Album!June 17, 2010 Randy(Florida) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Chris Knight is one of the best(if not THE best!) songwriters in America, and A PRETTY GOOD GUY is his best album. With the possible exception of Bruce Spriungsteen, no one writes stories of the plight of the common man with as much intelligence, insight and compassion. "Becky's Bible" is the story of a man who fires a gun in the heat of an argument and is now on the run and contemplating his fate. "Oil Patch Town" is the story of a normal Friday night in Anytown, USA. "Down The River" is nothing short(IMO) of the greatest story-song ever written, a story of murder and revenge to rival any suspense novel. "North Dakota" tells a tragic story of a lover lost in a blizzard. This album is what country music fans and radio should be seeking out, instead of pablum like Tim McGraw and Kenny Chesney.
A Pretty Good Guy, A Pretty Great Songwriter!June 22, 2006 Susan Kopko(Youngstown, FL United States) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Contrary to another reviewer, I find that this, Chris' second album, appeals even more than the first, only to be bested by the 3rd , "The Jealous Kind". Certainly, all 3 will be eclipsed by his fourth "Enough Rope" that will be released 7/11. The opening song "Becky's Bible" immediately pulls you into Chris' world, a card game turned violent, a man on the run. Followed by "A Pretty Good Guy" a clever telling of a rejected man summing up his good parts. "Send a Boat" told in 3 vignettes, a heart breaking story about loneliness and abandonment. All songs on this CD are exceptionally well written and delivered in a truthful laid back style. "Down The River" and "North Dakota" are 2 of my favorites. This music defies category. Chris touches you in a personal way. My life is not reflected in his stories necessarily, but there's a loneliness deep in the core of his music that effects me deeply. I'll be listening to these songs when I'm 80.

I just began listening to Chris Knight a few weeks ago. I bought one CD and after listening to it, I bought his other two. I'd describe it as good ol' boy country. Highly recommened.

This is a great Cd. Of course, anything dan baird is involved with is bound to be excellent. Also, anyone who is compared to Steve Earle is bound to be dam good..........
Great follow-up albumNovember 4, 2003 Robert(Lakeland, TN United States) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Chris Knight's CD "A Pretty Good Guy" has a raw, gritty feel to it that echoes strongly of fellow Nashville outcast Steve Earle. Knight's amazing songwriting skills and captivating lyrics don't hint around a subject like other story song singers. He goes right for the jugular of the message he is sending. This is why he is so popular among a fringe group of country music fans. Unlike his first CD, "A Pretty Good Guy" has more passionate and personal lyrics that speak about more than just people' misfortune. They are much more encouraging than previously (except for a couple of songs). Chris Knight would be secured as one of the best songwriters in country music if the industry was not so leary of his take on music. This is a great CD. If you like listening to music with a message, Chris Knight is a singer you should give a chance.
